Rockies snap Giants' win streak after losing suspended game

DENVER -- Charlie Blackmon lined a two-out single in the ninth inning off reliever Sergio Romo, helping the Colorado Rockies beat San Francisco 10-9 on Monday and stop the Giants' six-game win streak on a long day at Coors Field.

Earlier in the day, the Giants broke away from a tie and beat Colorado 4-2 in a game that resumed after it was suspended May 22 in the sixth inning because of rain.

In the regularly scheduled game, Rockies reliever LaTroy Hawkins (3-2) blew a save in the top of the ninth. In the bottom half, Mike McKenry led off with a single up the middle off Romo (5-4). McKenry scored from third when Blackmon's hit fell near the right-field line.

Hunter Pence hit a three-run homer for the Giants. Pence also came up big hours earlier, when his tiebreaking double in the eighth led the Giants in the resumption.

Hawkins struggled in the ninth, giving up an RBI single to Buster Posey and another to Pablo Sandoval that tied the game.

It set the stage for Blackmon, who collected the Rockies' seventh walk-off hit of the season. He had been 0-for-5 in the game before the hit.

Trailing 7-2 in the sixth, the Rockies scored four runs off starter Tim Hudson. They tied the game the next inning on Josh Rutledge's run-scoring single off reliever Jean Machi.

Pinch hitter Ben Paulsen gave the Rockies a 9-7 lead with a two-run homer. Paulsen was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs earlier in the day.

Brandon Crawford broke out of a slump with a pair of RBI singles and a run-scoring double. Pence extended his hitting streak to 14 games with his homer in the first.

Hudson gave up six runs and remained winless at Coors Field. Hudson acknowledged the last time he was in town that a victory in this hitter friendly-park remains one of the items on his baseball bucket list.

Franklin Morales was hit hard by the Giants a few days after shutting them down. He gave up seven runs in 4⅓ innings in the no-decision.

The earlier game of the day restarted tied at 2 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and a runner on first. Jeremy Affeldt (4-2) struck out Rutledge to end the inning.

Pence, who homered in the fourth inning on May 22, doubled home Andrew Susac.

Christian Friedrich (0-4) took the loss.

Hudson was the starter on May 22, going three innings before exiting because of the lengthy weather delay.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Giants: OF Michael Morse experienced soreness on his left side in batting practice before the first game. He's considered day-to-day.

Rockies: LHP Boone Logan (left elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list, ending his season. The 30-year-old Logan was 2-3 with a 6.84 ERA.

UP NEXT

Giants: RHP Yusmeiro Petit (4-3, 3.44 ERA) will make his eighth start of the season on Tuesday. He beat the Rockies 4-1 last Thursday.

Rockies: RHP Jordan Lyles is making a second straight start against the Giants. He surrendered one run in six innings during a no-decision last week.

STRANGE HAPPENINGS

There were several oddities in the game resumed from May 22 because of the long layoff:

- Susac's single in the eighth will now show up as his first hit in the majors, at least in the chronology of this season's box scores. Until Monday, his first hit was listed as July 30, a few days after he was promoted from Triple-A.

- Tyler Colvin and Brandon Hicks, who both started that game in May for the Giant, were later designated for assignment.

- The Rockies have four players appearing in the final box now on the DL -- shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, outfielder Michael Cuddyer, catcher Wilin Rosario and righty Tommy Kahnle.
