MIAMI -- The light-hitting Philadelphia Phillies have been masterful at making runs count, and a clutch double by a .135 hitter helped them eke out another win Sunday.

Rookie Tyler Goeddel's first career extra-base hit drove in a run with two outs in the eighth inning, and he then scored as Philadelphia rallied past Miami 6-5.

The Phillies improved to 11-3 in one-run games, by far the best in the majors. That included victories in the final two games at Miami to take the three-game series.

"It's pitching and defense," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. "That keeps you in the games."

But a rare show of offensive might also helped as the Phillies scored more than four runs for the first time since April 24.

They trailed 3-0, took the lead and then fell behind 5-4. Goeddel stepped to the plate in the eighth only 5 for 37 this year, but he tied the game and then scored on a double by Andres Blanco.

"We're finding ways to win," Goeddel said. "It has been fun to be a part of."

The Phils scored their final two runs against David Phelps (2-2), who came into the game with a 1.00 ERA.

"They're fighting. They're playing with a lot of confidence," Phelps said. "They put a lot of scrappy at-bats together."

Philadelphia's Aaron Nola allowed three runs in six innings, ending his scoreless streak at 23 innings, and then watched the Phils rally.

"I feel like we've only had two or three games that haven't been by one run," Nola said. "It makes it much sweeter when we do win the close games."

Hector Neris (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and Jeanmar Gomez pitched around a two-out single in the ninth for his 11th save, most in the majors. Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton was rested but pinch-hit with one out in the ninth, and Gomez struck him out.

Miami's Chris Johnson made the score 4-all in the seventh inning with his first homer of the season, and his second career pinch-hit homer.

But the Marlins (16-14) lost for only the third time in 14 games. They fell into fourth place in the NL East, one game behind the Phillies (18-14).

"Winning two of three from this team, one of the hottest teams in baseball, is really satisfying," Mackanin said.

ROOKIE BREAKTHROUGH

Goeddel played for the fourth time in five days and said the increased work has helped his timing.

"We knew he had to be a better hitter than he has shown," Mackanin said. "He hasn't shown a whole lot. But he's starting to look like the kind of hitter we think he has a chance to be."

SHAKY DEFENSE

Fielding lapses cost the Marlins for the second straight game. Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria's wild throw helped the Phillies score three runs to make it 3-all in the sixth, and the tying run was unearned.

In the seventh came another lapse, allowing the Phils to take the lead.

Odubel Herrera was at second base with one out when Cesar Hernandez hit a broken-bat grounder to first baseman Justin Bour. Pitcher Nefi Ogando covered first but had to lunge for the throw, and after tagging the base he collided with Hernandez, which sent both of them sprawling as Herrera scored standing up.

"We probably helped them out a little more than we should have," Miami manager Don Mattingly said.

Phillies: LHP Adam Morgan (0-0, 6.00) is scheduled to start Tuesday when the Phillies begin a three-game series at Atlanta and face RHP Matt Wisler (1-2, 3.24).

Marlins: RHP Jose Fernandez (3-2, 4.28) is scheduled to start Monday when Miami opens a three-game series against Milwaukee and RHP Wily Peralta (2-3, 7.50). Fernandez is 19-1 at Marlins Park and seeks his second victory of the homestand.
