SAN DIEGO -- As soon as the first inning ended, Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado came into the dugout and began yelling in frustration.

The Rockies had been shut down 1-2-3 by former teammate Drew Pomeranz in the top of the inning and gave up Matt Kemp's impressive three-run home run in the bottom.

"Just frustration got the best of me," Arenado said after the Rockies lost 4-0 Friday night, their third straight defeat and sixth loss in seven games. "If I was going to do that I probably should have done that in the tunnel. I got frustrated, I let it out. The boys know I love them. I wasn't yelling directly at anyone. Just losing is getting old."

Said manager Walt Weiss: "He was frustrated. He cares. He wasn't directing it at anybody. He was just kind of pacing in the dugout. Not a big deal. He was just frustrated. You let him have his say and then move on."

Kemp's home run was estimated at 458 feet, matching the longest at Petco Park, and Pomeranz pitched seven innings of two-hit ball as the Padres bounced back from Thursday night's meltdown.

The Padres won a night after a bullpen meltdown so big that manager Andy Green called it "borderline inexplicable." The Padres blew a 12-2 lead to the Seattle Mariners, who scored 14 times in two innings to win 16-13. It was the biggest comeback in Mariners history and the biggest collapse in Padres history.

Pomeranz (5-5) shut down the Rockies through seven, striking out eight and walking two. Ryan Buchter, part of Thursday night's collapse, pitched a perfect eighth and Carlos Villanueva pitched the ninth.

Pomeranz began his big league career with the Rockies in 2011.

"He's having a good year," Weiss said. "He's very different than what we remember when he was with us. Lot of confidence in the cutter now, commands the ball well, velocity maybe not the same but he's a better pitcher than he was back then. He can be effectively wild at times, but there's deception and he cuts the ball well."

Kemp homered into the last row of the second deck in left field off Chris Rusin (1-4) in the first. It matched a 458-foot homer hit by Adrian Gonzalez to right-center on April 26, 2009, when he was with the Padres.

When the Rockies got back to the dugout, Arenado let loose.

"I can't repeat a lot of (what I said)," Arenado said after the game. "I was just frustrated, losing gets kind of old, and I'm frustrated with myself. ... I don't really have the perfect words to explain it. I was just upset."

Said Rusin: "It was just the emotions of the game. Baseball is emotional and he felt he needed to light a fire under our team. That's what he did. ... He lit a fire under me and made me compete harder."

It was Kemp's 14th. Jon Jay, coming off his first career five-hit game, hit a leadoff single and took third when Rusin fielded Wil Myers' comebacker and threw it into center field for an error ahead of Kemp's homer.

Melvin Upton Jr. scored on a straight steal of home in the fourth. With two outs and Pomeranz batting, Upton got a great jump and touched the plate with his left hand as his slide carried him just out of the reach of Nick Hundley's tag.

San Diego won for the third time in 12 games.

Rusin allowed four runs -- three earned -- and four hits in seven innings.
