PHILADELPHIA -- Pete Mackanin brought a cheat sheet out to his postgame press conference with a list of names. The Philadelphia Phillies manager is not used to so many players having big offensive performances, so he wanted to make sure didn't forget anybody.

Aaron Nola pitched six scoreless innings and matched his career high with nine strikeouts and the Phillies backed him with three home runs Sunday in an 8-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

"When a pitcher gets a ball up in the zone, we want to attack it," Mackanin said. "And up until today, we haven't done enough of that. Hopefully this is the start of something big for us."

Maikel Franco homered in the third, then Jimmy Paredes and Cameron Rupp hit back-to-back shots during a five-run fifth.

Philadelphia matched its season high with 13 hits.

"The offense was outstanding today -- a lot of hard contact," Franco said. "The team showed a lot of energy."

Nola (5-4), who turned 23 on Saturday, maneuvered out of several tough spots. The Brewers stranded 10 runners against him, including seven in scoring position.

Nola gave up eight hits and left with a 2.65 ERA.

"It was strange," he said. "I told the infield I was going to get them a 1-2-3 inning one time, and it didn't happen. I got in jams pretty much every inning. But I battled hard and kept the team in the game, which was the most important part."

Wily Peralta (3-7) allowed five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. The last batter he faced was rookie Tommy Joseph, who hit an RBI double -- it was initially ruled a home run before being overturned due to fan interference.

Reliever Neil Ramirez then gave up home runs to his first two batters as Rupp followed Paredes' three-run drive with another shot. It was the first time this season the Phillies hit back-to-back homers.

The Phillies led 3-0 when Odubel Herrera, who had four hits, singled to begin the big fifth.

"It's disappointing," Peralta said. "I'm not doing the job I'm supposed to do."

Franco hit his 10th home run and second in four games.

The Brewers avoided the shutout with an RBI single from Ramon Flores in the eighth.

BOTTLE-THROWING INCIDENT

Phillies slugger Ryan Howard was irritated and it had nothing to do with his on-field struggles. At the end of Saturday's 6-3 loss to Milwaukee, a fan threw a beer bottle that landed near Howard's feet.

"I've done too much in this town to have that kind of stuff," Howard told reporters prior to Sunday's game. "If you want to yell out ... that's whatever. But when you start throwing stuff, that's when stuff gets personal."

Police are investigating the matter.

Howard, a three-time All-Star who's been with the Phillies for more than a decade, has not started the last five games, ending Saturday's contest with a pinch-hit groundout to the pitcher. He's batting .151 this season with eight homers and 19 RBI. He didn't play Sunday.

"That's dangerous," Mackanin said after the game. "We can't have that happen. Of course I'm concerned for my players' safety."

BREAKING LOOSE

The Phillies' five-run fifth inning marked the first time this season they've scored more than three in a frame -- a fact they were well aware of coming in.

"(Bench coach Larry) Bowa mentioned before the game that we haven't" done it, Mackanin said. "And when the four went up, (catching coach John) McLaren let Bowa have it, telling him, `There's your three runs. There are four right there."

LEAPING GRAB

Brewers center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis prevented further Phillies damage with a nice catch against the wall on a deep Cody Asche drive in the seventh inning.

RAKING ROOKIE

Joseph went 7 for 16 with a double, a home run and two RBI during the four-game series vs. Milwaukee.

UP NEXT

Brewers: Open a two-game set at home vs. Oakland on Tuesday with Milwaukee's Zach Davies (3-3, 4.53) opposing Sean Manaea (2-3, 6.16).

Phillies: Adam Morgan (1-4, 7.07) opposes fellow southpaw Jon Lester (6-3, 2-29) as Philadelphia hosts a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs starting Monday night.
