Howard, Herrera, Eickhoff lead Philies past Blue Jays 7-0

TORONTO -- Strong pitching and a little bit of power gave the Philadelphia Phillies something rare this season: a comfortable win on the road.

Ryan Howard and Odubel Herrera homered, Jerad Eickhoff pitched six spotless innings to win consecutive starts for the first time this season, and Philadelphia snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0 Monday night.

The Phillies snapped a six-game road skid and matched their biggest margin of victory anywhere this year.

"It was nice to win by seven runs for a change," manager Pete Mackanin said.

Herrera went 2 for 5 with three RBI as the Phillies won for the third time in 13 meetings with Toronto.

Peter Bourjos had two hits and two RBI for Philadelphia, which had lost 17 of 22 overall.

"Eick threw the ball really well," Bourjos said. "He got ahead of hitters and put them away."

Eickhoff (4-8) allowed three hits. He walked four and struck out five.

"It wasn't the prettiest game by my personal standards," said Eickhoff, who struggled to command his two-seamer.

David Hernandez pitched the seventh, Hector Neris handled the eighth and Andrew Bailey finished the six-hitter.

Toronto scored 21 runs in winning its previous two games but did not manage an extra-base hit against the Phillies. The Blue Jays were shut out for the fourth time.

"When you don't score, it's never a good thing," manager John Gibbons said.

Herrera opened the scoring with a two-out homer in the third and Howard doubled Philadelphia's advantage with a leadoff drive in the seventh.

Both homers came off right-hander R.A. Dickey, who allowed three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

"Today was kind of a letdown," Dickey said. "I don't think we played with a lot of energy."

Ten of Howard's 24 hits this season have been home runs.

"He's a big guy," Dickey said. "He got his bigness behind it."

Dickey (4-7) has received 14 runs of support over his last six starts, half of them coming in last Wednesday's 7-2 win at Detroit. The knuckleballer is 0-5 with a 5.14 ERA in seven home starts.

Joe Biagini came on after Dickey walked Cody Asche, but gave up an RBI double to Bourjos. Aaron Loup replaced Biagini and allowed an RBI single to Herrera.

Philadelphia scored three more off left-hander Scott Diamond in the ninth. Cesar Hernandez hit an RBI double and Bourjos added a run-scoring single.

MANIC MONDAYS

Philadelphia snapped a 13-game losing streak on Monday nights. The Phillies won on a Monday night in Canada for the first time since July 15, 2002, at Montreal.

DRAWING A BLANK

The Phillies shut out an AL opponent for the first time since a 3-0 victory at Oakland on Sept. 20, 2014.
