TORONTO (AP) -- Jarrod Washburn enjoyed the best game of his
career after overcoming a sick stomach.

Washburn won for the 15th time in 16 decisions, limiting Toronto
to three hits over eight innings as the Anaheim Angels beat Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 Sunday.

"That's the best game I've pitched,'' Washburn said. "I was
pretty sick in the first three innings. I was almost throwing up on
the mound. I didn't know if I would last much longer.''

David Eckstein homered for the lone run.

Washburn (15-3) retired 17 straight after Dave Berg hit a bloop
double into shallow center field with one out in the first inning.

After Berg led off the seventh with an infield single, Chris
Woodward followed with a single to left. But Wasburn preserved the
shutout by striking out Vernon Wells, getting Josh Phelps to pop up
and Orlando Hudson on a flyball.

"It's probably the best game I've seen him pitch,'' Anaheim
manager Mike Scioscia said.

The 27-year-old left-hander struck out five and walked none to
become the fifth AL pitcher to win 15 games. Halladay was also
trying for his 15th victory.

"When you are going up against a guy like Halladay, you know
you have to be extra sharp,'' Washburn said.

Washburn wanted to try for a shutout, but he understood why
Scioscia brought in Troy Percival, who pitched a perfect ninth for
his 27th save.

"We are not in a situation right now where we can be doing
things for personal achievement,'' Washburn said.

The Angels moved within 2½ games of first-place Seattle in the
AL West and maintained their half-game lead over Boston in the wild
card race. Anaheim took two of three from Toronto to win its first
series since taking two of three from Seattle July 26-28.

Washburn has accounted for four of the Angels' six wins in their
last 12 games.

"He threw a lot of fastballs,'' Woodward said. "He uses both
sides of the plate and he comes right at you.''

Halladay (14-5) retired his first nine batters before Eckstein
led off the fourth with a homer off the left-field foul screen.

Halladay hung a curveball to the 5-foot-8 Eckstein.

"To a bigger guy, that's probably a good pitch,'' Eckstein
said. "I'm definitely a smaller target. Being small might have
helped me out right there.''

Halladay lost for the first time since June 28, a span of seven
starts. He allowed one run on nine hits in eight innings, struck
out six and walked one.

"He's arguably the best right-hander in the league,'' Scioscia
said.

When reminded Pedro Martinez is in the AL, Scioscia said:
"That's why he's arguably.''

Game notes
The Blue Jays were without Carlos Delgado (sore back) and
Jose Cruz Jr. (left ankle injury). The Blue Jays placed Delgado on
the disabled list before the game. Delgado played 432 consecutive
games before missing last Sunday's game. He then sat out the next
three games before returning to the lineup as the DH on Thursday.
He was too sore to play this weekend. Cruz remains day-to-day. ...
Washburn is the Angels' first 15-game winner since Chuck Finley in
1996. ... Eckstein has seven home runs. ... Dave Berg was 2-for-4
for the Blue Jays, who completed their 10-game homestand with a 4-6
record.
