Schilling makes 19th win look easy

PHOENIX (AP) -- On his third try, Curt Schilling hardly broke a
sweat while becoming the season's first 19-game winner.

Schilling pitched seven scoreless innings Sunday as the Arizona
Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep of the Florida Marlins
with a 9-2 victory.

He allowed five hits, struck out eight, walked none and threw
just 89 pitches, 61 for strikes.

"We jumped out early and I thought we kept the pressure on them
offensively all day,'' Schilling said. "That certainly changes the
way you pitch. It feels good. We had a good homestand.''

While most of the Diamondbacks go to South Bend, Ind., for an
exhibition game Monday against Arizona's Class-A affiliate,
Schilling is headed to the players' association meeting in Chicago,
where a strike date could be set.

"I have no idea,'' he said when asked what he expected in
Chicago. "I want to hear that we've got something solved,
something done.''

Schilling (19-4) was the fastest to reach 18 victories since
Randy Jones of San Diego in 1976, but had failed to get No. 19
despite two strong outings -- a 2-1 complete-game loss at Montreal
on Aug. 1 and a no-decision in Arizona's 4-3, 13-inning loss to
Atlanta last Tuesday.

This time, the Diamondbacks supported him with 14 hits through
seven innings, and he left with an 8-0 lead. Manager Bob Brenly
said Schilling easily could have continued to pitch.

"We had a couple of guys down there in the bullpen that needed
some work,'' Brenly said. "We had a comfortable lead, so we got
him out of there at that point and hopefully saved some pitches for
later on.''

Every Arizona starter had a hit, including Luis Gonzalez, who
ended an 0-for-24 skid with an RBI single in the sixth. He also
doubled in the eighth.

Chad Moeller doubled twice with two RBIs, Steve Finley went
3-for-5 and drove in a run, and Matt Williams had a pair of RBI
singles.

"Eight guys scored runs,'' Brenly said. "Six guys drove in
runs. As I've told you many times before, that's when we're usually
at our best is when we're getting contributions from everybody.''

Arizona gave Schilling a 3-0 lead after two innings, enough
against the anemic Marlins, who were outscored 32-11 while going
1-5 on their road trip. Arizona outscored them 20-5 in three games.

Florida faced Arizona's pair of aces at their best. Randy
Johnson, whose 17-4 record is second only to Schilling's in the
majors, struck out 14 in a 9-2 victory Saturday. Johnson and
Schilling lead the majors in strikeouts with 240 and 238,
respectively.

"It reminds of the old days of Koufax and Drysdale,'' Marlins
manager Jeff Torborg said.

Despite losing two of three to Atlanta to open their six-game
homestand, the Diamondbacks have won 16 of 20, including 11 of 13
at home.

"The Braves came in here hot as could be and they took a couple
from us,'' Williams said, "but we're playing well.''

Arizona scored twice off Josh Beckett (4-6) in the first.
Quinton McCracken, a late replacement for ailing David Dellucci,
doubled with one out and scored on Junior Spivey's single.

Torborg and catcher Mike Redmond said Beckett had a tough time
controlling his pitches.

"He kept flying out of his delivery a lot,'' Redmond said. "He
just couldn't get the ball down and really couldn't make any
adjustments out there. He just never got anything going other than
his fastball. That makes it tough against a first place-caliber
team.''

After Erubiel Durazo walked with two outs, Williams lined a
single to right to drive home Spivey and make it 2-0. Finley
singled to right, but Juan Encarnacion threw out Durazo at home to
end the inning.

The Diamondbacks went ahead 3-0 in the third when Moeller led
off with a double, advanced to third on Schilling's single and
scored on Tony Womack's grounder.

Arizona scored two more in the fifth. With two outs, reliever
Carl Pavano walked Williams. Finley singled, and Moeller brought
them both home with his second double.

Florida's Tim Raines got his 2,600th career hit with a pinch-hit
double off reliever Mike Koplove in the eighth.
