Glavine's Braves eke out 1-0 victory

ATLANTA (AP) -- Tom Glavine took care of the first seven innings.
Then it came down to a classic matchup: Barry Bonds vs. John Smoltz.

Bonds flied out to the warning track in the ninth against
Smoltz, and the Atlanta Braves held on to a 1-0 victory over the
San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night.

Glavine won for the fifth time in six starts, but everyone was
talking about the matchup between baseball's reigning home run king
and one of the game's most dominating closers.

''That's what the fans came to see, power vs. power,'' said Gary
Sheffield, who drove in the only run with a first-inning single.
''It was a win-loss situation, Barry put good wood on it but it
stayed in the park. We won that one tonight.''

Even after Jeff Kent flied out to the warning track in
right-center, Smoltz didn't back down from Bonds. The Braves closer
came in with a 97 mph fastball on a 3-2 pitch and watched a liner
head toward the deepest part of Turner Field.

Andruw Jones, already lined up about as far back as he could
get, drifted onto the warning track and made the catch in front of
the 400-foot sign.

Smoltz got Benito Santiago on a popup to end the game, earning
his major league-leading 42nd save in 46 chances.

''I was definitely going to challenge Bonds,'' Smoltz said.
''Obviously, you want to keep it in the park. That was a little
close.''

Braves manager Bobby Cox, who never criticizes his players
publicly, was clearly taken aback by Smoltz's pitch selection with
a full count on Bonds.

''He almost hit it out,'' Cox said, managing a nervous grin.
''That's all I'll say.''

Bonds went 1-of-4 with an infield single. He has gone four games
without a homer since becoming the fourth player to hit 600 in a
career.

Afterward, he refused to talk with reporters.

Glavine (16-6) gave up just five hits for his 240th win, tying
him with Frank Tanana and Clark Griffith for 48th on the career
list. The left-hander has allowed two earned runs or less in 19 of
27 starts this season, bouncing back from a brief slump in early
July when he was bothered by a blister.

''I'm kind of back on track,'' said Glavine, who has one shutout
himself and been part of three others. ''I'm much closer to where I
was in the first half of the season.''

After Tim Spooneybarger walked two, Smoltz made a rare
appearance in the eighth. With one pitch, he got Rich Aurilia to
hit into an inning-ending double play.

The ninth was much more challenging.

''In that situation, you're on the edge of your seat,'' Glavine
said. ''It was a great matchup with Bonds. Smoltzie went right
after him. He hit it good, but fortunately it had no elevation.''

Glavine faced the minimum through the first four innings, then
had to pitch out of jams in the next three.

Tsuyoshi Shinjo struck out swinging with runners at second and
third to end the fifth.

The next inning, Giants pitcher Livan Hernandez led off with his
first career triple, though he was lucky not to be called out. The
pitcher failed to slide and replays appeared to show Vinny Castilla
tagging Hernandez just before he reached the bag. Umpire Mike
DiMuro, whose view was obscured, called safe.

It didn't matter to Glavine, who made sure the runner didn't get
any farther. David Bell popped out to second, Aurilia hit a weak
grounder in front of the plate and Kent flied out to center.

In the seventh, Benito Santiago reached third with two outs,
only to watch J.T. Snow go down swinging on the last of Glavine's
102 pitches.

''You get him in a box and he knows how to make pitches to get
out of it,'' Giants manager Dusty Baker said. ''He can tease you as
good as anybody around.''

Rafael Furcal led off the game for the Braves with a double. He
moved to third on a grounder and scored on Sheffield's single to
left.

Hernandez (7-13) gave up seven hits in seven innings. Even with
the strong outing, he's gone six starts since his last win on July
12.

''I felt good in the bullpen,'' Hernandez said. ''They let me
throw more fastballs. It was working.''

With cameras flashing around the park, Bonds singled in his
first at-bat even though he didn't get the ball out of the infield.

He squibbed an inside fastball toward third, but the Braves had
no chance to make a play since three infielders were shifted to the
right of second base and third baseman Castilla was playing in the
shortstop hole.

By the time Castilla scooped up the ball, Bonds was standing on
first, smiling.

Game notes
The Braves turned a unique double play to end the third.
With Snow breaking from first, Hernandez hit a sharp grounder that
was backhanded by Castilla. He threw to second, where Furcal
already was covering. The shortstop took the throw and relayed to
first for a 5-6-3 double play. ... Bonds is hitting .321 (25-of-78)
career against Glavine. ... Matt Franco served as the Braves'
emergency catcher with Henry Blanco ailing and Javy Lopez on the
DL. Steve Torrealba started. ... The Braves tied for the major
league lead with their 11th shutout.
