Shawn Green hit his 35th homer and Kazuhisa Ishii got his first
win since July 14 to lead Los Angeles to a 5-2 victory over the
Montreal Expos on Wednesday night.

The Dodgers moved a half-game ahead of San Francisco for the NL
wild card lead, one night after closer Eric Gagne allowed an
eighth-inning homer for just his third blown save of the season.

``We did something tonight we've done all year,'' Dodgers
manager Jim Tracy said. ``We got our hearts broken last night with
the big home run from Troy O'Leary and we turned around and bounced
back tonight against a tough pitcher in Bartolo Colon.''

Gagne, a Montreal native, was greeted with a standing ovation
from the Olympic Stadium crowd of 13,416 when he came on to pitch
the ninth. He retired the three batters he faced for his 40th save.

``Gagne looked like he was out to get us for yesterday,'' said
Expos catcher Michael Barrett, one of Gagne's two strikeout
victims.

``I was a lot more relaxed,'' Gagne said. ``I think I was
smiling on the mound. I tried to put a different perspective on it
-- not trying to show what I can do, but just going out there and
doing what I can do.''

Green, who is second in the NL in homers to Chicago's Sammy
Sosa, broke a 2-2 tie with a one-out solo shot off Colon (5-2) in
the third for his eighth homer in 14 games.

Ishii (13-7) allowed three hits in six-plus innings for just his
second win since the All-Star break.

Ishii allowed two hits -- Jose Macias' leadoff double and
O'Leary's RBI single -- and two runs in the first, and Vladimir
Guerrero's leadoff double in the third.

The Japanese rookie retired 11 in a row after Guerrero was
easily thrown out at third base when he tried to stretch his
double.

He left after walking Orlando Cabrera, who stole second, and
Andres Galarraga to lead off the seventh.

Paul Shuey relieved and got Macias to ground into an
inning-ending double play later in the inning to escape a
bases-loaded jam.

Tyler Houston doubled off T.J. Tucker with one out in the eighth
and scored to make it 4-2 on Alex Cora's two-out RBI single. Los
Angeles added its fifth run in the ninth on Paul Lo Duca's
run-scoring single.

The loss dropped Montreal 7½ games behind the Dodgers in the
wild card race, one night after Expos manager Frank Robinson said
``we cannot lose a ballgame the rest of the year.''

While he wasn't prepared to throw in the towel on Montreal's
playoff hopes, Robinson didn't sound terribly optimistic about his
team's chances.

``I wouldn't say we're out of it but I'll tell you one thing, we
may be on the dance floor but we can't hear the music right now,''
Robinson said.

Dave Roberts and Marquis Grissom hit back-to-back doubles off
Colon to put the Dodgers up 1-0 two batters into the game.

Adrian Beltre got Los Angeles' third straight hit when he
reached on an infield single. Green popped to second for the first
out but third baseman Fernando Tatis' high throw pulled second
baseman Jose Vidro off the base for an error as Lo Duca's grounder
loaded the bases.

Colon struck out Tyler Houston and Mark Grudzielanek to escape
the jam and Montreal took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half on Fernando
Tatis' sacrifice fly and O'Leary's run-scoring single.

Alex Cora singled to lead off the second and, one out later,
scored the tying run when center fielder Jose Macias misplayed
Roberts' second straight double for an error.

Colon allowed 10 hits and three runs -- two earned -- in seven
innings as he lost for the first time in five home starts since he
was acquired from Cleveland on June 27.

Game notes
Ishii walked four and has 95 walks in 139 1/3 innings. He
has walked four or more in 14 of 24 starts this season. ... Colon
was 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA (seven earned runs in 34 innings) in his
first four Olympic Stadium starts with the Expos. He also allowed
two runs in eight innings for the win in Cleveland's 5-4 victory here on June 22 in his last start with the Indians.
