PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Once he relaxed, Brett Myers almost was
unhittable.

The rookie right-hander took a shutout into the ninth inning
before settling for his first career complete game, leading the
Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers
on Wednesday night.

Myers (2-2) allowed two-out singles to Jeffrey Hammonds and
Richie Sexson in the third inning, a leadoff single to Jose
Hernandez in the seventh and a solo homer to Sexson with one out in
the ninth.

Myers, the No. 12 overall pick in the 1999 draft, struck out
four and walked four in his fifth career start. He allowed just two
baserunners after the third, and retired 17 of the last 19 batters.

The way he started the game, manager Larry Bowa wasn't sure how
long Myers would last. All of his walks came in the first three
innings.

''He started out overthrowing, but he settled in,'' Bowa said.
''He showed what he can do. He had good stuff, great command. You
could see his confidence grow after the third inning.''

Myers, one of the few bright spots in a dismal season for the
Phillies, had lost both of his previous starts at Veterans Stadium.

''To come out and pitch in front of the fans with the way they
support you, you get an adrenaline rush. I had to channel that,''
he said. ''I just tried to get ahead of the hitters, throw strikes,
make them hit the ball and let the defense make the plays.''

Marlon Anderson homered, and Pat Burrell drove in his 89th run
for the Phillies, who won their third straight game. Philadelphia,
which moved out of last place Tuesday night for the first time
since April is one game behind the New York Mets for third place in
the NL East.

Jamey Wright (4-12) allowed four runs and five hits in seven
innings for Milwaukee.

''He just shut us down like it was our first day of spring
training,'' Brewers manager Jerry Royster said of Myers. ''I'm not
taking anything away from him, but we've been terrible.''

Myers gave up two hits and one run in eight innings to win his
big-league debut against Chicago on July 24, but allowed 12 earned
runs in 17 innings over his next three starts.

His complete game was just the second by a Phillies pitcher this
season. All-Star Vicente Padilla has the other one.

''He's got all the ability, all the tools and he wants to be
here,'' Burrell said. ''He understands that his stuff is so good
that all he has to do is throw strikes.''

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Abreu
in the first. Jimmy Rollins led off with a double, moved to third
on a sacrifice bunt by Placido Polanco and scored on Abreu's
shallow liner to left.

Burrell made it 2-0 with a two-out RBI single in the third that
scored Rollins. Jeremy Giambi followed with a ground-rule double to
give the Phillies a 3-0 lead.

Anderson's solo homer in the fourth made it 4-0.

Myers was 9-6 with a 3.59 ERA in 19 starts at Triple-A Scranton
before getting called up to replace Robert Person.

''He had an excellent breaking ball,'' Brewers left fielder Matt
Stairs said. ''He had command of three pitches and his catcher did
a good job of calling pitches.''

Game notes
The Brewers are 2-12 on the road since the All-Star break
and 17-43 overall. They've been shut out nine times this season.
