Marlins top Rockies 1-0 thanks to controversial run

MIAMI (AP) -- One bobble was all the Florida Marlins needed.

Brad Penny pitched eight scoreless innings and Juan Encarnacion
drove in the winning run in the ninth when shortstop Juan Uribe
couldn't turn a double play, giving Florida a 1-0 victory over the
Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.

The Marlins managed just three hits, but did just enough to snap
a five-game losing streak.

''It's a relief to get through this,'' Florida outfielder Kevin
Millar said. ''Hopefully this can get us going again.''

The game remained scoreless until the ninth inning. Mike Redmond
led off with a walk against Victor Santos (0-2). Millar followed
with a single that sent pinch-runner Homer Bush to third -- the
first Marlin to get that far in the game.

After Mike Lowell struck out, Derrek Lee walked to load the
bases. Encarnacion then hit a grounder to Uribe, who bobbled the
ball and could only get the out at first base as the winning run
scored.

Uribe thought he had tagged Millar off second and that his throw
on to first completed an inning-ending double play. However, second
base umpire Jim Joyce saw it differently and ruled that Uribe
missed the tag.

''He never touched me,'' Millar said. ''As soon as the ball was
hit, I tried to get out of the way. He made an attempt to tag me,
but he missed and I saw him panic.''

Uribe had a different reaction.

''I tagged him. He put his elbow out and hit (my glove) going
by,'' Uribe said. ''I can't believe they didn't call it. I thought
it was a double play.''

Penny allowed just two hits and Graeme Lloyd (3-3) pitched a
perfect ninth to get the win for the Marlins, who have scored just
10 runs in their last six games.

Penny and Denny Neagle were locked in a pitchers' duel, with
Neagle not allowing a hit until Luis Castillo's one-out single in
the sixth.

Neagle has allowed only one earned run in the last 20 innings.
He retired 15 of the first 18 batters he faced, allowing walks to
Lee in the second, and to Lee and Encarnacion in the fifth.

Neagle pitched seven innings, allowing two hits while striking
out three. Castillo broke up the no-hit bid, lining a single to
right with one out in the sixth. Millar had the other hit off
Neagle, a single to open the seventh.

''I stayed with the offspeed stuff tonight because that's what
was working,'' said Neagle, who had won his previous two starts,
allowing one earned run in those 13 innings.

''Sometimes pitchers turn it into an ego thing. They don't want
to rely on changeups to get guys out, but if it works, you stick
with it.''

Penny was equally effective, retiring 18 of 19 batters through
six innings, allowing only a single to Neagle in the third. Brent
Butler singled to lead off the seventh for Colorado's other hit.

''My command has been good lately, and I'm getting ahead of the
hitters,'' Penny said. ''I've felt fine the last few starts. I'm
healthy now, and a good defense behind me has also been a factor.''

The game got a bit testy in the fourth inning after one of
Penny's pitches sailed behind Todd Zeile's head. Zeile stared down
at Penny, but things didn't heat up until after Zeile grounded out
to end the inning.

Both benches emptied, although the players remained just outside
the basepaths of their respective dugouts. Home plate umpire Ron
Kulpa spoke to both managers and issued warnings to both teams.

Zeile said there has been bad blood between the two since he hit
a home run off Penny in May of 2001.

''He acts like he's going to hit me whenever we play,'' Zeile
said. ''He throws up and in, and he yells at me whenever he strikes
me out. He acts like a 3-year-old. I just stared at him. He looked
back and I said, 'Go ahead and hit me because that's what you
really want to do.' I guess they didn't like that.''

Game notes
Mike Mordecai started at shortstop for the Marlins, his
seventh start of the year. ... After collecting four hits on
Tuesday, Rockies OF Larry Walker was out of the lineup. ... Neagle
robbed Penny of hit, snaring a line dive to open the sixth.
