ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Edgar Martinez had a rough day while
playing a big part in Seattle's win. Now the Mariners will have to
play without their 40-year-old designated hitter for a few days.

Martinez hit a two-out solo homer in the first that put the
Mariners ahead for good Sunday in their 11-2 win at Texas. He later
was hit by a pitch and scored, then left the game after he strained
his left hamstring while beating out an infield hit.

"It's a little sore, but I thought it'd be worse,'' Martinez
said. "I can walk without a limp and probably jog.''

Martinez will be out three-to-five days with what the team
called a mild strain. He will miss Seattle's home opener Tuesday
against Anaheim.

"It puts a damper on this day, as much as he means to this
team,'' said first-year Mariners manager Bob Melvin, who has won
three of four since an 0-2 start.

After Martinez homered, Dan Wilson hit an RBI single in the
second on the first pitch he saw this season as the Mariners jumped
on Chan Ho Park early.

Seattle led 4-0 when Park (0-2) was pulled after Ichiro Suzuki's
leadoff single in the fourth. The Mariners scored in each of the
first three innings.

Park has pitched just 5 2/3 innings in his two starts, allowing
10 runs and 11 hits. The right-hander was 9-8 in an injury-plagued
2002 season, his first after signing a $65 million, five-year deal
with Texas.

"I really paid for a couple of bad pitches, especially the one
to Martinez, which was a hanging curveball,'' Park said. "I felt
good today. I just tried to make better pitches.''

It is the first time Park has started 0-2 in his eight-year
career. It is also the first time he has had consecutive starts
that went three innings or less.

Freddy Garcia (1-1) bounced back from his poor first start,
allowing just two runs and three hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck
out four and walked six, the last to consecutive batters in the
seventh before he was pulled after 118 pitches (64 strikes).

"I really had good concentration and made good pitches when I
needed to,'' Garcia said. "I was trying to keep the ball down.
When you do that, good things start happening.''

In his first start Tuesday at Oakland, Garcia gave up five runs
and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in a 5-0 loss. The Rangers lost
10-0 at Anaheim in Park's first start that night.

Martinez, who missed two months after rupturing his left
hamstring tendon last season, was hurt as he ran to beat out a
grounder after first baseman Rafael Palmeiro fielded the ball but
pitcher C.J. Nitkowski was late covering first. Martinez grimaced
as he reached the base, and left the field walking gingerly.

"The play was going to be close at first, I didn't want to make
an easy out,'' Martinez said. "It's something that's instinct. You
don't think about it when you're running.''

John Mabry took over for Martinez as a pinch-runner and then hit
a three-run double in Seattle's five-run seventh.

Martinez's second homer of the season came after Park struck out
the first two batters.

Wilson, activated from the disabled list earlier Sunday, singled
to left in the second to score Jeff Cirillo, who had reached on a
one-out walk.

Wilson had been on the DL since March 19 with a muscle strain on
his left side. He hurt himself during batting practice Feb. 28 and
did not play in a major league spring training game. He was 0-for-7
in two games for Double-A San Antonio before rejoining the Mariners
on Saturday.

"It felt good to be back with the guys and playing,'' Wilson
said.

The Mariners loaded the bases to start the third when Martinez
was hit by a pitch, John Olerud had an infield single and Bret
Boone walked. A run was forced in when Mike Cameron got hit by a
pitch.

Palmeiro fielded Cirillo's hopper and threw home to Chad Krueter
for an out. Carlos Guillen then hit the only ball out of the
infield during the inning, a sacrifice fly to left that made it
4-0.

Mike Lamb's sacrifice fly in the fourth and Hank Blalock's solo
homer in the fifth accounted for the Texas runs.

Blalock homered in all three games of the series, and is hitting
.500 (12-for-24) for the season.

Olerud's third hit was an RBI single in the ninth.

Garcia is 61-30 in 124 career games (123 starts) since
making his major league debut in 1999. ... Seattle had 14 hits,
three of them infield singles. ... Texas has given up at least 10
