After embarrassing loss, Braves go to work early vs. Penny

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Braves didn't take long to shrug off
their lopsided loss.

Chipper Jones had a two-run single and Andruw Jones followed
with a two-run double in the first inning as the Braves bounced
back from their worst loss in three seasons with a 13-4 victory
over the Florida Marlins on Sunday.

"What happened yesterday is over with. It's about showing
people we can do it,'' Andruw Jones said.

After Atlanta ace Greg Maddux was pounded for three homers and
nine runs in only two innings of a 17-1 loss Saturday night, the
Braves responded quickly against Florida starter Brad Penny (0-1).

"It was sort of the reversal of yesterday,'' Braves manager
Bobby Cox said. "We got all the hitting. We hit the ball hard all
day long. It felt good to get a lead early.''

Rafael Furcal went 4-for-5, scored two runs and drove in another
and Andruw Jones went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs as Atlanta
picked up only its second win in six games this season.

Robert Fick added a two-run homer, his first with the Braves,
and Gary Sheffield also hit a two-run shot.

Braves rookie Horacio Ramirez (1-1) earned his first career win
in his second start. The left-hander went six innings and allowed
four runs -- three earned -- and six hits. He finished strong,
retiring eight Marlins in a row.

"I didn't have my best stuff but I held them off for six
innings,'' Ramirez said. "The first couple of innings I was having
problems for some reason, but I turned to my cutter (breaking ball)
after that and it got me out of some jams.''

Saturday's loss was the worst for the Braves since a 17-1 defeat
to Montreal on July 3, 2000.

The Marlins scored two runs in the second inning on an RBI
groundout by Gerald Williams and a sacrifice fly by Mike Redmond.

Mike Lowell added a run-scoring single in the third and the
Marlins got within 6-4 with an unearned run in the fourth on three
Atlanta errors.

Penny gave up six runs, eight hits and five walks in five
innings.

"I should never have given up six runs with the stuff I had
today,'' Penny said. "I was a little off in the first inning.
After that I settled down, came back and did pretty well. I've just
got to get that first inning out of the way.''

Game notes
Penny was making his first start after being suspended for
the first five games of the season after hitting Montreal's
Vladimir Guerrero with a pitch during a spring training game March
14, leading to a bench-clearing brawl. ... Florida OF Juan
Encarnacion stole second in the first inning, his fourth and the
Marlins' major league leading 11th in 13 tries. ... Florida SS Alex
Gonzalez went 1-for-3 and is 8-for-14 (.571) with four home runs
and nine RBIs after an 0-for-7 start. ... Furcal's steal of second
in the opening inning was Atlanta's first stolen base of the
season. ... Ramirez, who made his major league debut in a 3-0 loss
to Montreal on Wednesday, got his first hit and RBI in the third
inning. He said it was his first-ever hit in pro ball in some 40-50
at-bats. ... Braves 3B Vinny Castilla made his third error in six
games in the fourth. He made only six errors in 143 games last
season. ... Atlanta 2B Marcus Giles drew four walks -- two
intentional -- and struck out in five plate appearances.
