Lyon return to top of Ligue 1 table with 1-0 defeat of Nantes

Lyon moved back to the top of the Ligue 1 standings thanks to a 1-0 win over Nantes on Sunday.

Nabil Fekir scored the only goal of the game in the 66th minute to ensure his side leapfrogged Paris Saint-Germain and moved back into top spot after PSG had beaten Toulouse on Saturday.

Nantes remain in 13th place, seven points clear of the bottom three, and would have been beaten more heavily but for a last-minute penalty miss.

Lyon were boosted ahead of kick-off as striker Alexandre Lacazette made his return from a few weeks out of action after recovering from a thigh injury and the home side looked the brighter side in the early exchanges.

Fekir should have done better in the seventh minute when Mouhamadou Dabo picked him out, but the midfielder could only blaze over the bar.

Lyon continued to press and some good work by Henri Bedimo provided Yoan Gourcuff with a decent shooting opportunity, but his seemingly goal-bound shot was blocked well by defender Olivier Veigneau.

Nantes responded in the 13th minute but Vincent Bessat's cross was just too high for Ismael Bangoura, before Kian Hansen's follow-up shot was blocked by Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti.

The first half continued in end-to-end fashion, with Serge Gakpe going close for the visitors before dragging wide with another effort hitting the side netting. At the other end Fekir found the angle of the framework from a 25-yard-free kick, with keeper Remy Riou well beaten.

The two sides left the pitch with the game deadlocked at 0-0 at the break, and it was not until after the hour mark that Fekir finally made the breakthrough.

Gourcuff found Lacazette after a great run and the latter's cross was bundled home by Fekir with the help of Nantes defender Veigneau after some confusion with his own keeper.

Lyon were then unlucky as they had two penalty shouts turned down. Nantes defender Oswaldo Vizcarrondo appeared the handle the ball in the area before seconds later bringing down Fekir.

The hosts had the chance to wrap up victory twice in the 90th minute, first through Clinton N'Jie, who got through on goal only to fire straight at Riou, before Maxime Gonalons fired wide from the penalty spot with the last kick of the match after Riou felled Fekir.
