Celta Vigo 1-1 Sevilla FC

Sevilla's hopes of Champions League qualification appear to rely on winning the Europa League after they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Celta Vigo.

Kevin Gameiro had given them an early lead with an eighth-minute strike, but Celta, who dominated possession, kept plugging away and got their reward with a controversial penalty claim when Charles tumbled - not for the first time - and Santi Mina tucked the spot-kick away just before the hour mark.

The draw leaves Sevilla three points off fourth-placed Valencia, who have the advantage in head-to-head record, with two games left to play. In order to reach Europe's premier club competition, Sevilla may need to defend the Europa League title they won last season, having beaten Fiorentina 3-0 in the first leg of their semi-final on Thursday.

Celta hogged the ball but Sevilla were set up to counter-attack and profited at the first attempt as Iago Aspas linked up neatly with Gameiro, who lashed a shot across goal.

Moments later, Gameiro might have had a second as he pounced on a loose ball, but Sergio Alvarez denied him with a good save.

Celta suffered frustration at the other end, most of it felt by Charles who repeatedly appealed for penalties to no avail while also being guilty of glancing a header wide from Mina's inch-perfect cross when unmarked. It looked easier to score.

He was soon claiming for a foul off the ball again, but his ambitious attempt to lob Sergio Rico from 45 yards - a shot which sailed high and wide - looked to have more credibility than his appeals.

Sevilla were happy to soak up the pressure, and showed why when they once again switched through the gears and ripped Celta apart with a swift move, only for Gameiro to turn Aspas' cross wide with the goal gaping.

They should have had a second when Alejandro Arribas ghosted through to head Denis Suarez's cross against the post, but it stayed 1-0 at the break.

Celta started the second half brightly and Charles finally got the referee's attention in the 57th minute but appeared as much the instigator as victim of any contact with Alejandro Arribas. Either way, Mina fired in from the spot.

With time running out, Alvarez made a firm punch to keep out Gameiro's header, while Celta raced to the other end where Fabio Orellana's shot was blocked for a corner which came to nought, forcing both sides to settle for a point.
