Getafe defeat Espanyol to boost Primera Division survival bid

Getafe gave themselves breathing space in the battle to avoid being relegated from the Primera Division with a 2-1 win over Espanyol.

The Azulones had not beaten Friday's opponents in the league at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez since January 2006, but ended that much-maligned record thanks to goals from Pablo Sarabia and Alvaro Vazquez.

Anaitz Arbilla pulled one back late on, but it was not enough to stop Quique Sanchez Flores' men moving up to 11th and seven points clear of the bottom three.

Having beaten their opponents earlier in the season and with such an enviable record at the Madrid stadium, the Catalan club would have been full of confidence.

But it was Getafe who started strongly, with Sarabia seeing his strike saved by Espanyol goalkeeper Francisco Casilla.

Pedro Leon spurned a golden chance when he missed the target from close range but the hosts went in front in the 33rd minute when Sarabia slotted home from Alexis' cross from the right.

Espanyol could not find a way through. Indeed, their first attempt at goal arrived in the second half with Christian Stuani's strike from just outside the area was comfortably saved by Jonathan Lopez in the 48th minute.

Their hopes of getting anything from the game were further reduced when Getafe doubled their lead in the 57th minute.

Sarabia provided the assist this time, the former Real Madrid midfielder providing the pass for Vazquez to fire high into the net.

To their credit, Espanyol responded to the setback by going on the offensive and Lopez twice denied Lucas Vazquez, first saving his point-blank strike and a few minutes later tipping his 20-yard effort round a post.

Felipe Caicedo was also denied by the Getafe keeper, who was beaten in the 89th minute following a remarkable 25-yard volley from Arbilla that sailed into the net.

It was a moment of magic that Espanyol needed and, although they searched for a winner in the final minutes, Getafe held on for all three points.
