Bayern Munich beat Hertha as Bundesliga title edges closer

Bayern Munich edged closer to the Bundesliga title with a 2-0 win at Hertha Berlin, maintaining their seven-point lead at the top of the table over Borussia Dortmund with just three games of the season remaining.

After struggling in the first half, Arturo Vidal's deflected shot gave Bayern the lead early in the second half.

Douglas Costa added a second for Pep Guardiola's men, who can now look ahead to a Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid safe in the knowledge they are now just one more win away from a fourth successive Bundesliga title.

Hertha made a confident start to the game, doing most of the early attacking in the Olympiastadion and preventing Bayern from having the possession and control they are accustomed to.

Thiago Alcantara had Bayern's first big chance of the game almost midway through the half when he beat the offside trap to latch onto Costa's pass -- but Thomas Kraft made himself big to block the Spaniard's shot behind for a corner.

Vedad Ibisevic had a chance at the other end as Hertha continued to spend more time in the Bayern penalty area than most of the Bavarians' opponents have this season.

However, the hosts' game lacked creativity and the threat to Manuel Neuer's goal remained minimal as Bayern kept things tight in a goalless first half.

The record champions took the lead early in the second half after Vidal was given the ball by Mario Gotze 25 yards out. The Chilean, who faced fierce criticism for his dive which earned a penalty in Bayern's 2-0 win over Werder Bremen in the DFB-Pokal semi-final in midweek, sent in a shot which took a wicked deflection off the knee of Niklas Stark to leave Kraft no chance in the Hertha goal.

Robert Lewandowski's bid to double Bayern's lead was cut short by the linesman's flag as Guardiola's men started to take control of proceedings.

The Pole then missed the near post as Bayern looked to turn the screw, and they succeed when Costa cut in from the right and sent an unstoppable shot into the far corner of Kraft's goal in the 79th minute.

With Dortmund also winning on Saturday, Bayern were unable to celebrate winning the title, but they can do that next weekend with just one more win required for their 25th Bundesliga title.
