Chelsea target John Stones starts, as Everton come back to beat Barnsley

Everton were almost shocked by League One side Barnsley in the Capital One Cup but rallied to win 5-3 in extra-time as they started John Stones against his former club, despite the defender having handed in a transfer request.

Stones, who began his career at Barnsley, has been the subject of three bids from Chelsea and told Everton earlier this week that he wants to leave during the transfer window.

However, he could do nothing about Barnsley's attack on Wednesday night as Sam Winnall found acres of space to rifle home the opener in the 22nd minute.

The underdogs then went 2-0 up as Marc Roberts' cross was headed home by Marley Watkins to give them a commanding lead at half-time.

However, Everton were level not long after. Kevin Mirallas struck on 51 minutes after Barnsley failed to clear a cross and Steven Naismith got on the end of a Gerard Deulofeu cross minutes later to make it 2-2.

The draw lasted just a few seconds though as Barnsley went up the other end almost immediately and got themselves back in front as Arsenal's on loan midfielder Daniel Crowley rifled the ball in from the edge of the box.

Romelu Lukaku then got the Toffees back on level terms as Deulofeu's cross fell to him to tap home and, in the 30 minutes of extra-time, the Belgian striker forced Marc Roberts' own goal before netting the winner after great work from Ross Barkley to complete a memorable comeback.
