Zenit St Petersburg defeat Valencia to continue 100 percent record

Zenit St Petersburg maintained their 100 percent record in Group H of the Champions League and guaranteed themselves top spot with a 2-0 win against Valencia.

Oleg Shatov opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a neat chipped finish and Artem Dzyuba made it five goals in as many group matches with a well-worked second 16 minutes from time.

Visiting defender Ruben Vezo was shown a straight red card to end the game as a contest as Zenit remain on course to become the first Russian team since Spartak Moscow in 1995-96 to take maximum points from their group games.

Valencia striker Paco Alcacer had the first shot of the game in the third minute, swivelling on the edge of the box, but his effort lacked power and Yuri Lodygin made a comfortable save.

Zenit almost went in front in the 13th minute as full-back Domenico Criscito's attempted low cross looped over the goalkeeper and was headed off the line by Jose Gaya.

Andre Villas-Boas' men did take the lead two minutes later when the Valencia defence was caught napping. The ball was played through by Dzyuba and Shatov had plenty of time to take a touch and chip the ball over Domenech Jaume.

Teenage debutant Rafa Mir saw a close-range effort blocked and Alcacer could not direct a free header goalwards from an inviting Sofiane Feghouli cross as Los Che looked to respond before half-time.

Hulk almost caught out Jaume with an inswinging corner in the 55th minute and the same player sent over a fine free-kick to pick out Ezequiel Garay shortly afterwards but the defender's header drifted wide.

Valencia thought they had equalised after 67 minutes as substitute Santi Mina slotted home only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Los Che had been threatening an equaliser when Zenit hit them on the break to double their advantage.

Danny played a superb one-two with Shatov and coolly passed the ball across for Dzyuba to stroke into an empty net.

Valencia were reduced to 10 men when Vezo lunged in on Shatov as he raced towards goal from the left flank and it was all Zenit in the closing stages.

Substitute Aleksey Evseev brought a decent stop from Jaume and Axel Witsel's fierce drive was well-held by the goalkeeper.
