Fernando Torres was sent off shortly after scoring as Barcelona came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Camp Nou in the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday night thanks to two goals from Luis Suarez.
Barcelona had the best of the opening exchanges as Lionel Messi hammered a shot wide after Andres Iniesta was allowed to run 40 yards with the ball at his feet. The Argentine then badly miscued a volley after good work from Neymar and Jordi Alba down the left, but the No. 10 sliced his effort well wide.
The Camp Nou applauded through the 14th minute in tribute to the late Johan Cruyff, and Atletico had their first chance soon after as Yannick Ferreira Carrasco dribbled through but smashed his effort against Javier Mascherano.
In the 19th minute, Barcelona should have been 1-0 up. Dani Alves swung a cross in and Neymar leaped from six yards out to put his header over the bar, despite having evaded the attentions of his marker.
Antoine Griezmann went close with a shot that flew past the post, then Fernando Torres put Atletico ahead with a well taken goal in the 25th minute. Koke slipped the ball down the middle and Torres burst through the gap to slot between goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen's legs for a vital away goal.
Ter Stegen then had to be at his best to push Griezmann's effort round the post as the Barcelona defence was caught out with only Alba racing back to close down the Frenchman's shot.
However, the game took a turn in the 36th minute as Torres picked up his second yellow card and was sent off. Having landed a first for a pull on Neymar just four minutes after scoring, the Spaniard then clattered in late on Sergio Busquets six minutes later to receive his marching orders.
Atletico retreated into their shell, put men behind the ball to protect their one-goal cushion and managed to get to half-time with it still intact. Yet it was Atletico who came out the better in the second half as Carrasco whipped a dangerous cross across the box.
Barcelona countered well and a sweeping move saw Neymar cross, Messi take the ball down on his chest and perform an overhead kick which just narrowly missed the post.
After their early scare, the Catalans laid siege to Atletico's goal. Neymar crashed a curling effort off the bar and Filipe Luis had to scramble clear from six yards with Messi and Suarez closing in.
In the 55th minute, Neymar's header found Jan Oblak in the Atletico goal and the keeper then pushed Messi's low shot away with Juanfran on the spot to clear before Neymar was able to follow up.
With Atletico pushing 10 men back, even inside their own area at times, the Brazilian tried to take advantage and cut inside to unleash a shot that skimmed just past the post. Minutes later, his decision not to shoot saw an equaliser arrive.
Neymar turned down a shot from a similar position, chose to pass on the edge of the box for Alves to cross and the right-back's effort was hit back across the box by Alba, where it was stabbed home at close range by Suarez in the 63rd minute.
Alves was at the centre of things again as Suarez netted his 45th goal in 45 games this season to put Barcelona 2-1 up just 11 minutes later. Neat interplay saw the ball find Alves on the right and his cross was met by Suarez, who headed firmly past Oblak and into the net.
Messi was felled in the box late on, but no penalty was given -- leaving the Argentine still searching for his 500th career goal -- and, although Barcelona picked up the win, Atletico will at least be happy with the away goal that keeps them firmly in the tie.
