Maribor snatch dramatic point with last-gasp equaliser

Luka Zahovic salvaged a last-gasp 1-1 draw for Maribor in their opening Group G Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon.

Zahovic, who was born in Portugal, headed home in stoppage time to cancel out a superb strike from Nani in the 79th minute.

The result, Sporting's third successive draw, may be seen as a missed opportunity by both sides given they face tough clashes against Chelsea and Schalke in future Group G games.

Maribor, who beat Zrinjski Mostar, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Celtic in qualifying, showed early glimpses of their attacking intent with Sporting keeper Rui Patricio forced to tip round the post from Agim Ibraimi's rasping drive from the edge of the box.

Marco Silva's Sporting side then gradually took control in midfield, but all they could muster were long-range strikes that failed to put Maribor keeper Jasmin Handanovic under any kind of pressure.

Adrien Silva and Nani were both guilty of blazing wide when a more patient approach might have been a better idea.

But Andre Carrillo almost provided a breakthrough for Sporting, who had only won once so far this term before tonight, when he clattered the bar in the 27th minute.

The Peruvian first smashed a left-footed drive from 12 yards that Handanovic did well to parry, before picking up the rebound and curling it onto the bar with his other foot from almost the exact same spot.

The Slovenian champions came back strongly and they hit the post themselves before the break.

Aleksander Rajcevic rose high to meet Dare Vrsic's free-kick delivery, but unfortunately for the hosts his header hit the post with Rui Patricio beaten.

Maribor picked up where they left off after the interval, with Marcos Tavares twice going close around the hour mark as Sporting were once again limited to long-range efforts.

But Nani, back at Sporting on loan from Manchester United, forced a great save from Handanovic in the 62nd-minute.

The 27-year-old, who spent four years at Sporting before joining United in 2007, curled a superb strike from the edge of the box but the veteran keeper was equal to it and showed great reflexes to tip it over the bar to safety.

Undeterred by that miss Nani finally broke the deadlock with a moment of genuine class in the 79th minute.

Cutting in from the right, with Maribor slow to push out after successfully defending a cross, Nani struck it left-footed into the bottom corner with pinpoint precision to give Handanovic no chance.

But just when the Portuguese side were preparing to toast a winning return to the Champions League group stages, a pair of botched clearances allowed Zahovic to head home in stoppage time and give Maribor a share of the spoils.
