Espanyol take edge over Sevilla in Copa del Rey quarterfinals

Espanyol moved a step closer to the Copa del Rey semifinals after stunning in-form Sevilla 3-1 at Estadi Cornella-El Prat -- but a stoppage-time goal has given the visitors a lifeline.

Espanyol looked to be cruising towards a last-four showdown with either Malaga or Athletic Bilbao after establishing a three-goal lead in Thursday's quarterfinal first leg through strikes from Felipe Caicedo, Sergio Garcia and Lucas Vazquez.

However, Sevilla pulled a goal back in added time through Carlos Bacca following a goalmouth scramble -- sparking wild celebrations on the Andalusian club's bench.

Sevilla, who had won nine of their previous 10 matches in all competitions, might even have netted a second goal before the final whistle but Denis Suarez fired over with only the keeper to beat.

Earlier, Caicedo put Espanyol ahead in the 18th minute with a fine strike from the edge of the box -- his fourth goal in three games -- before Sergio Garcia doubled the lead with a 72nd-minute penalty and Lucas made it 3-0 nine minutes from time.
