Ecuador scored two goals in two minutes in the final stages to stun Argentina in their 2018 World Cup qualifying clash in Buenos Aires and earn a thoroughly deserved 2-0 win.
Gustavo Quintero's men looked like they would have to settle for a point, but their domination was finally rewarded by quickfire goals from Frickson Erazo and Caicedo in the 81st and 82nd minutes respectively.
It was a night to forget for Argentina, and the repercussions of this defeat will spread to England as Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero limped out of the first half with a serious-looking hamstring injury.
Ecuador were not fazed by never having won a World Cup qualifying game on Argentinian soil and were soon into the ascendency.
They should have taken an 11th-minute lead when Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia surged through on goal but inexplicably misplaced his pass to Jefferson Montero when the visitors had three on one in the Argentinian box.
The home defence went missing from a corner two minutes later as well as two attackers tried to force the ball home before Javier Mascherano eventually cleared.
The hosts then had a fine chance to go in front but Aguero, fresh from his five goals for City in the Barclays Premier League last weekend, was denied by a superb save from Alexander Dominguez after some good play by Angel Di Maria.
It was Aguero's final piece of action before suffering a hamstring which saw him leave the field on a stretcher.
Back came Ecuador, though, and they again produced a glaring miss in the 26th minute when Miller Bolanos skied his 15-yard effort.
With Aguero now off the field and Lionel Messi injured, Argentina looked bereft of ideas in attack and Ecuador had further chances after the break.
Christian Noboa chipped just wide while Gabriel Achilier had a free-kick tipped over the bar by the over-worked Sergio Romero.
But Ecuador won it with a two-goal salvo in the final 10 minutes.
First Erazo headed home after finding himself unmarked from a corner and then a minute later some superb wing-play by Valencia set up Caciedo who converted in style.
There was no way back for Gerardo Martino's men as they suffered a first defeat on home soil since 2009 while Ecuador were left celebrating creating a piece of history.
