Atletico Madrid finish Primera Division season with victory over Celta Vigo

Fernando Torres and Antoine Griezmann each scored in the second half as Atletico Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0 to finish the Primera Division season on a high.

Diego Simeone's side bowed out of the title race last week by losing at Levante but the Argentine fielded a full-strength team in front of the home supporters, and they delivered for a fitting send off before the Champions League final in two weeks time.

Torres' angled volley put Atletico on their way to victory in the 51st minute after a stale first half and then Griezmann followed up another acrobatic effort from Torres that had hit the bar.

There were further celebrations as midfielder Tiago came off the bench to make his comeback after five months out with a broken leg.

Atletico finish third on 88 points while Celta surrendered fifth place to Athletic Bilbao, although sixth place still entitles them to Europa League football next season.

The Rojiblancos made the stronger start and, after Saul Niguez's distance effort was repelled by Sergio Alvarez, they came to within inches of taking the lead, Diego Godin heading against the crossbar from close range.

At the other end, Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak produced a fine save to prevent Fabian Orellana heading Celta in front, and he also denied a free kick from Nolito.

Atletico broke the deadlock from a set-piece. Celta's Daniel Wass could only head the ball to his back post from a corner and Torres reacted quickly to volley into the near corner, scoring his sixth goal in seven games and his 11th of the season.

Torres also created the second, sending a bicycle kick against the underside of the crossbar, and Griezmann reacted quickest, tapping in the rebound to grab his 22nd goal of the league campaign and his 32nd in all competitions.

Torres later made way for Tiago in what could be his last appearance at the Calderon, with his contract running out next month, although the former Liverpool and Chelsea forward has said he is in negotiations with the club about a new deal.

The happy mood that greeted Tiago's return was tempered by a feisty end to the game which witnessed six yellow cards in as many minutes, although no players were sent off.
