Atletico Madrid go through thanks to Antoine Griezmann double

Atletico Madrid made sure of their place in the Champions League knock-out stages with a comfortable 2-0 win against Galatasaray at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Antoine Griezmann scored a goal in each half as Diego Simeone's side extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine matches.

In doing so, Atletico joined Benfica on 10 points and those two teams will contest top spot in Group C in Portugal next month in the final round of fixtures.

The hosts started well and had Galatasaray on the back foot for the opening 10 minutes but the Turkish team should have taken an early lead.

Wesley Sneijder burst through on goal after 12 minutes but Jan Oblak made a superb save to deny the Dutchman.

It proved a costly miss as a minute later Griezmann arrived unmarked in the box to head home Fernandez Gabi's cross.

It looked like the floodgates would open as Griezmann, Jorge Koke and Diego Godin all went close in quick succession but Galatasaray survived.

Fernando Torres, still waiting for his 100th goal for Atletico, was annoyed shortly before half-time when Filipe Luis opted to go for goal himself rather than set up the Spanish striker.

Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera then clawed away a Koke effort just after half-time but the second goal eventually arrived after 65 minutes when Griezmann tapped home another Gabi cross.

Torres, on 99 goals since September 19, was made to continue to wait for his milestone as Muslera made a decent save to keep out his shot from the edge of the box.
