Real Madrid defeat Chelsea thanks to two goals from Marcelo

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Real Madrid rode a dominating first half performance to defeat English Premier League side Chelsea 3-2 in an International Champions Cup match on Saturday.

Marcelo scored twice and Mariano Diaz added the third to stake Los Blancos to a 3-0 half-time lead. Real appeared to be cruising from there, but Chelsea's Eden Hazard scored a pair of late goals to provide the final scoreline.

With the crowd of 105,826 fans still settling into their seats, the Blues almost took an early lead in the third minute. John Terry couldn't control Willian's free kick, but the ball skipped through to Nemanja Matic, whose shot was saved by Kiko Casilla at point-blank range.

The rest of the half was controlled by Marcelo and his Real teammates, as they continually attacked Chelsea's right flank. While Chelsea started 19-year-old Ola Aina at right back, he was given precious little help from his more experienced teammates.

The La Liga side took the lead in the 19th minute. Real were first to corral a half-cleared cross and the ball found Marcelo on the left wing. The Brazilian dribbled towards center of the field, evaded compatriot Willian, and fired his shot off of Oscar to leave goalkeeper Asmir Begovic with no chance.

Marcelo doubled the advantage seven minutes later. The Brazilian started the sequence by stealing the ball and then working a one-two with Asensio to get behind the Chelsea defense. He then finished off the play by firing his shot past Begovic and inside the keeper's near post.

Real added a third in the 37th minute with Marcelo turning provider this time. Another combination involving the Brazilian ended with him feeding Diaz, and when no Chelsea defender closed him down he fired a 30-yard thunderbolt over the outstretched hand of Begovic.

The score could have been more lopsided, as Begovic twice came up with sharp saves -- one off a Raphael Varane header and another from Casimiro's free kick -- to limit the damage.

Given their comfortable lead, Real set about managing the second half and appeared to be succeeding despite a parade of substitutions around the hour mark.

Chelsea pulled a goal back in the 80th minute when a long ball found substitute Hazard in the clear before he rounded substitute keeper Ruben Yañez and slotted the ball into the net.

A similar play saw Hazard score again in second-half stoppage time to make the game close. Juan Cuadrado then had a late opportunity to get the ball into the box, but his cross was blocked by the Real defense.
