Neymar, Lionel Messi fire Barcelona to derby win at Espanyol

Neymar and Lionel Messi were on target as Barcelona eased their way to a 2-0 win at local rivals Espanyol to increase their grip on top spot in the Primera Division.

Brazilian Neymar struck after 16 minutes put Barcelona on their way to victory and then Messi scored from a tight angle nine minutes later to double the visitors' lead.

The only negative for Luis Enrique's side was Jordi Alba getting sent off in the second half for earning two successive bookings, but the league leaders continued playing as if it was they who had an extra man, and could have extended their lead.

Espanyol defender Hector Moreno was then also sent off in injury time to complete a miserable afternoon for the hosts.

Barcelona were made to sweat for their 2-0 win over Valencia in their last league outing, but their short trip to Cornella was equivalent to a walk through the city's Park Guell, and they move five points ahead of Real Madrid, who visit Celta on Sunday night.

Neymar fired the first warning shot at Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla when the game was just a few minutes old, and then the custodian got in the way of a stooping header from Luis Suarez.

Neymar came even closer to scoring in the 10th minute after connecting with a sumptuous pass from deep by Messi, but his shot flew inches over the bar.

The breakthrough arrived not long after. Again Messi came from deep to loft a pass to the left flank. Alba volleyed the ball into the box and Suarez stepped over the ball, leaving it for Neymar to rifle past Casilla. Barca had played 25 passes before the Brazilian finished the move off, a record in the Primera Division this season.

Barca's second goal was just as impressive. Suarez played a one-two with Andres Iniesta on the right of the area and sent the ball towards the far byline, where Messi controlled and then dispatched into the far corner.

Espanyol were mere spectators in the first half and barely troubled Claudio Bravo, but the home fans were lifted when Alba was shown a red card nine minutes after the break. First the defender was booked for a foul and then shown a second yellow card for arguing with referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz.

However, Barca continued to dominate, and Messi came to within inches of scoring again, striking the near post after playing a one-two with Suarez. Then Neymar fired over the bar after an impressive exchange of passes between the Brazilian, Iniesta and Suarez.

Espanyol finally woke up late in the game.

Substitute Christian Stuani struck over the bar and then had a clear sight of goal but Bravo saved well. Moreno was then also shown one yellow card for a foul and another for dissent, following Alba down the tunnel.
