Portugal beat Denmark with Moutinho goal, ensure spot in Euro 2016 finals

A goal from Joao Moutinho guaranteed Portugal will qualify for the European Championship as Group I winners as they saw off Denmark in Braga.

Having won all but one of their fixtures heading into the clash against the second-placed Danes, Fernando Santos' side were almost assured of their place at Euro 2016 but this 1-0 win topped off the campaign with a game to spare.

Moutinho's second-half strike means Denmark's qualification is out of their own hands, with Albania taking their place at the finals if they win against bottom side Armenia on Sunday.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the first to test Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as he fired in a long-range effort that the Leicester man dealt with comfortably.

The visitors came close through Nicklas Bendtner but he could not hit the target - and neither could Daniel Wass later in the first half.

Fenerbahce winger Nani hit the crossbar for Portugal with a header before the break with Bendtner's effort just after the interval coming back off the post.

Nani and Tiago forced further saves out of Schmeichel but he was powerless to prevent Moutinho opening the scoring as he collected a clearance on the edge of the box, took on Daniel Agger and fired home.

Denmark could not find a way back into the contest and were lucky not to concede late in the game as both Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma were kept out by Schmeichel in the closing stages.
