Atletico Madrid defeat Espanyol to stay in La Liga title race

Fernando Torres, Antoine Griezmann and Koke were among the scorers as Atletico Madrid came from behind to beat Espanyol 3-1 and remain in the title race.

Pape Diop's headed goal from a corner had put the Catalans ahead on 28 minutes but Torres grabbed a third goal in as many games to level before the break, and Griezmann's arrowed finish early in the second half completed the comeback, while Koke added a third late on.

The win keeps Atletico in second place in the Primera Division and maintains the pressure on leaders Barcelona, and will lift Atletico's confidence before their Champions League quarterfinal second-leg with Luis Enrique's side on Wednesday.

Diego Simeone made just one change from the team that lost 2-1 to Barcelona on Tuesday, bringing in Augusto Fernandez for Saul Niguez.

Torres kept his place in the starting line-up after being sent off in the first half against Barcelona and showed that the red card has not affected his confidence by striking the top of the crossbar in the 17th minute.

But Espanyol looked dangerous at the other end too, and it took a top save from Jan Oblak to prevent Gerard Moreno putting them ahead.

The home side took the lead from a corner from set-piece specialist Marco Asensio and Diop climbed above Torres to head home.

The former Spain international made amends six minutes later at the other end, combining with Koke for the third game in a row to score.

Koke also laid on the pass for Griezmann to put Atletico ahead on 58 minutes, the Frenchman smashing the ball in off both posts to grab a 20th league goal of the season.

At the other end Oblak dived low to deny Moreno again at the near post, and Spain midfielder Koke killed off Espanyol's hopes of a revival in the 88th minute, heading in a cross from Torres.
