Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, meaning their Champions League hopes will depend on their final group game away at Wolfsburg. Wayne Rooney returned to United's starting XI after missing Saturday's 2-1 win at Watford, but Louis van Gaal's side could not find a way through PSV's defence as the Eredivisie champions held on for a valuable point. Anthony Martial and Jeese Lingard both wasted presentable chances as the draw leaves Wolfsburg a point ahead of United in first, with the Red Devils likely to need a result in Germany to reach the last 16. The match marked the 10th anniversary of the death of George Best, with fans holding up their mobile phone lights in tribute to the club legend 10 minutes in memory of the Northern Irishman, who wore No. 7 during one of the club's most successful periods in the 1960s and 1970s. Chances were few and far between in the opening stages, with United's first real opening coming 20 minutes in -- Anthony Martial let the ball run for Jesse Lingard when the France international should have perhaps shot, and the England youngster overran the ball straight into PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet. Morgan Schneiderlin nearly opened the scoring for United after 30 minutes, but couldn't generate enough power to finish a sliding volley from close range as Zoet saved on his goal-line. PSV were a threat on the break as Jorrit Hendrix went close two minutes later, with David De Gea leaping to his right to cling onto the midfielder's curling 18-yard effort following a counter-attack. Martial should have scored after a Lingard shot ricocheted to send him through on the left, but Zoet saved the tame shot with his feet after the £36 million forward tried to finish with the outside of his right boot. Rooney then almost capitalised on a Zoet error as the keeper lost possession on the edge of his box, and Bastian Schweinsteiger was flagged offside as he nearly headed in from a flick-on at a corner. Zoet was alert to parry a fierce low Martial effort wide just before the interval, and United upped the tempo in the second half as Schweinsteiger and Lingard missed headers before Zoet saved from current No. 7 Memphis Depay. Louis van Gaal reacted just before the hour-mark by replacing Schweinsteiger and Depay with Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young, and the latter had an immediate impact with some dangerous crosses from the left. But PSV beat United in the reverse fixture and showed confidence as the game wore on, testing the hosts' back line on the counter and forcing De Gea into some smart work after Davy Propper juggled the ball to tee up a half-volley. Rooney's mistake then allowed PSV to break as the visitors had three on three, but Jurgen Locadia spurned the chance as he dragged wide. The first rumbles of "Attack! Attack! Attack!" were heard from the disgruntled supporters in the Stretford End with 20 minutes left, and United soon had their best chance of the game. Lingard met Young's fine cut-back from the flank with a free shot with 17 minutes left on the clock, but he lashed his half-volley over from 12 yards before thumping the turf in frustration.
