Ukraine draw against Slovenia to seal Euro 2016 place

Ukraine finally progressed to a major international tournament via a play-off at the sixth time of asking as they advanced past Slovenia to reach Euro 2016.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg in Lviv, Bostjan Cesar's header in the 11th minute gave the hosts hope of repeating their play-off success over Ukraine 16 years ago.

But this time Ukraine were not to be denied and after Miso Brecko was dismissed in stoppage time for a wild hack on Yevhen Konoplyanka, Andriy Yarmolenko scored with the final kick of the tie to make it 1-1 on the night.

There had been plenty of ill feeling between the two countries in the first leg and, three days on, they picked up where they left off.

There were just seven seconds on the clock when Cesar flung his elbow at Yevhen Seleznyov with the ball in the air, and the Slovenian defender was fortunate to only come away with a booking.

He soon made the most of his reprieve by breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute. Valter Birsa's free-kick came straight back to him and he produced an inviting cross from which Roman Bezjak's header was saved by Andriy Pyatov and Milivoje Novakovic's shot was blocked, but the ball looped up to Cesar to guide in from close range.

The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser before the break but Seleznyov was twice denied by Samir Handanovic while Yarmolenko was unable to reach Konoplyanka's cross as Ukraine's two dangermen looked to link up at the end of a first half which featured five cautions.

Although Slovenia only needed one goal to level the tie, it was Ukraine who still looked more likely to score next with Konoplyanka bringing a good save out of Handanovic, who also repelled an effort from Yarmolenko.

Man-of-the-moment Cesar almost converted from close range again before the game had to be temporarily halted while multiple flares which were thrown from the crowd at a corner were cleared.

Rene Krhin showed his frustration by kicking one of them away and similar feelings appeared to be running through Brecko's mind when when he scythed down Konoplyanka at waist height to earn a red card as Ukraine looked to spring a stoppage-time counter.

Then, in the seventh minute of stoppage time, the visitors broke away on a three-on-one attack after Kevin Kampl slipped, allowing substitute Artem Kravets to run 60 yards before laying off for Yarmolenko to fire home the equaliser and put the cherry on top of Ukraine's qualification.
