Kemp, Norris lead Padres' 17-hit attack in win over Rockies

The Associated Press

DENVER -- Odrismar Despaigne turned in another impressive start, but his first major league hit brought the biggest cheers from his San Diego teammates.

It also means a new wardrobe for the young right-hander.

Despaigne pitched strong into the seventh inning, Matt Kemp had three hits and four RBIs and the San Diego Padres scored nine runs in the first two innings of a 14-3 rout of the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.

Derek Norris had three of San Diego's 17 hits and Will Venable homered to help the Padres win for the fifth time in six games.

"This lineup is capable of doing that at any ballpark," shortstop Clint Barmes said.

For the second time this season every Padres starter got a hit, including Despaigne (2-0), who led off the third with a single. It was more than enough for the Cuban right-hander, who allowed just two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

But his teammates celebrated when Despaigne led off the third with a sharp single to right.

"Our bench went crazy," manager Bud Black said. "He's such a likable guy on our team."

The single also earned Despaigne a new set of clothes from the staff. He said his fellow pitchers told him if he got his first hit at Coors Field they would take him shopping.

"They're going to take (me) shopping and buy whatever I want," Despaigne said through translator and first base coach Jose Valentin.

The game was well in hand when Despaigne got his hit. Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa struggled in his 2015 debut, lasting two innings. The left-hander missed the first two weeks of the season with a left groin strain and was activated from the disabled list before the game.

He didn't have his usual sharpness at Coors Field, where he has a 45-15 career mark.

"I was overthrowing a lot," De La Rosa said. "I was trying to throw as hard as I can but you can't make outs if you don't have command."

San Diego scored nine runs in the first two innings to spoil De La Rosa's season debut. The first four Padres batters got hits, and Yonder Alonso's two-run single capped the their best first inning since scoring five at Cincinnati on July 29, 2009.

Will Middlebrooks' two-run triple highlighted a four-run second that ended De La Rosa's night.

De La Rosa (0-1) allowed nine runs -- seven earned -- on nine hits for his worst outing in seven years. The Rockies have lost four straight after beginning the season winning seven of their first nine.

"Yeah, he got ambushed there," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.

Colorado scored twice in the fourth but San Diego answered with five more runs in the fifth -- two on Venable's second homer of the season -- to go up 14-2.

It's the fifth time since 2000 the Padres have scored five or more runs in two innings of the same game, with three of those at Colorado.

LINE OF FIRE

Despaigne was knocked around, too, but his issues were comebackers off Colorado bats. Carlos Gonzalez led off the second with a grounder that went off the pitcher's left calf, but Despaigne was able to pick up the ball and throw him out.

Three batters later, Nick Hundley's line drive hit Despaigne in the chest, but he stayed in the game.

"Those balls were bullets," Black said. "He's a tough kid and he came out of it fine."

AILING ALL-STAR

Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado was a late scratch because of a sore left wrist. He said it was bothering him the last few days and the discomfort increased during batting practice.

"It kind of hurt a little bit (to swing the bat) so they just scratched me for the day," Arenado said. "I think I'll be fine (Tuesday). If not it should only be a couple days. It shouldn't be long."

TRAINER'S ROOM

Padres: RHP Ian Kennedy threw 81 pitches in an extended spring training game on Monday. Kennedy, who was put on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring injury on April 10, will rejoin the team Tuesday in Denver. He is eligible to come off the DL on Saturday.

Rockies: LF Corey Dickerson left the game after grounding out to end the third inning. "Dickerson has been dealing with some plantar fasciitis," Weiss said. "When he came out of the box that thing bit him."

UP NEXT

Padres: RHP Brandon Morrow (0-0) is going for his first win in his third start. He has pitched well this season, allowing just two earned runs in 14 innings, but he hasn't stuck around long enough for the win in either game.

Rockies: LHP Tyler Matzek (1-0) has a 1.80 ERA but the Padres have hit him well. In four 2014 starts against San Diego Matzek is 1/3 with a 3.67 ERA.
