Monchengladbach swat aside Werder Bremen with stylish first win of 2016

Borussia Monchengladbach picked up their first win of 2016 in emphatic style on Friday night, beating Werder Bremen 5-1 at the Borussia Park Stadion.

Gladbach, who had lost their first two games of the second half of the season, wasted no time in seeing off a Bremen side whose own fortunes had been looking up since the turn of the year.

Lars Stindl and Andreas Christensen gave the Foals a two-goal lead by half-time, with the latter adding a third shortly after the break.

Claudio Pizarro pulled one back with his 182nd Bundesliga goal, taking him to fifth in the all-time Bundesliga scoring charts, but there was not to be a recovery for Viktor Skripnik's men.

Raffael restored Gladbach's three-goal lead from the penalty spot, before Havard Nordtveit completed the scoring late on.

Gladbach's win lifted them up to two places to fourth, ahead of the rest of the weekend's matches.
