Atletico Madrid stay in touch with leaders as Antoine Griezmann strikes again

Antoine Griezmann fired his 23rd goal of the season as Atletico Madrid kept the gap to leaders Barcelona to eight points with a comfortable 3-0 home win against Deportivo La Coruna.

Midfielder Saul Niguez headed Atletico into a half-time lead and Griezmann eased them further ahead in the second period before Angel Correa added a late third. Deportivo's winless league run was extended to 13 matches.

Barcelona had earlier extended their advantage at the top to 11 points by thrashing Getafe 6-0 at Camp Nou in a 3pm kick-off, while third-placed Real Madrid will bid to keep in touch with the top two at Getafe on Sunday.

Griezmann forced Deportivo goalkeeper German Lux into an early save with a shot from the edge of the box before the home side took the lead in the 18th minute.

Defender Luis Felipe, whose crosses had already troubled Deportivo, whipped in another fine ball from the left and Saul burst on to it in front of defender Laure to head down and over the line.

Saul then teed up Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco, who hurried his shot and fired straight at Lux when sent through on goal as Atletico chased a second.

Celso Borges went close for Deportivo with a shot from outside the area soon after, but that was as good as it got for the visitors before the break while Griezmann's effort from inside the area flashed just wide.

Atletico were denied by the woodwork six minutes into the second half when Ferreira-Carrasco crashed an angled drive against the crossbar and the Belgian midfielder forced Lux into a fine low save two minutes later.

Home pressure told in the 60th minute though when Atletico took a deserved two-goal lead. Midfielder Koke fed Griezmann on the left side of the area and the Frenchman arrowed a low shot into the bottom corner.

Deportivo stirred themselves, with Alberto Lopo and Jonathan Rodriguez both firing shots just off target, but only a smart save from Lux prevented Diego Godin's header adding to the score.

Faycal Fajr at last forced Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak into action with a shot from outside the area before the home side added a third in the 83rd minute through Angel Correa, who raced on to Gabriel Fernandez's neat pass to rifle a low shot beyond Lux.
