Valencia's underwhelming start to the Primera Division season continued as they were held to a goalless draw at their Mestalla home by Real Betis, who played most of the second half with 10 men.
Midfielder Dani Ceballos was dismissed after 48 minutes for the visitors, and although Valencia took the initiative for much of what remained of the game, they failed to create many clear chances.
Towards the end of the match a large number of Valencia supporters called for manager Nuno Espirito Santo to be sacked, expressing their anger at the fact the club have taken just six points from their four league games so far and lost their opening Champions League group stage game to Zenit St Petersburg.
Valencia's first chance of the match came when Sofiane Feghouli beat defender Heiko Westerman with an impressive piece of skill but was denied by a fine save by Betis goalkeeper Antonio Adan.
Former Valencia forward Joaquin was one of Betis' most dangerous players and came close to scoring against his old club, but was denied by young goalkeeper Jaume Domenech.
Betis were forced to change their tactics when Ceballos was shown a second yellow card for bringing down substitute Zakaria Bakkali early in the second half, and spent the remaining minutes trying to quell the threat from the hosts.
They did that successfully, with only Javi Fuego and Santi Mina coming close to scoring, and the Andalusians move on to five points for the season.
