WASHINGTON -- D.C. United was eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions League despite Julian Buescher's first professional goal in a 1-1 draw against Queretaro on Tuesday night.
Angel Sepulveda scored early for Queretaro, which won the two-legged quarterfinal series 3-1 on aggregate to reach the semifinals in its first appearance in the tournament.
Buescher, United's first-round pick in January's MLS SuperDraft, answered late to provide consolation in D.C.'s second quarterfinal exit in as many years.
D.C. United opens their MLS regular season on Sunday at Los Angeles, which faced Santos Laguna in another quarterfinal later Tuesday.
Tiago Volpi made nine saves for Queretaro, including a stop of Chris Rolfe's penalty early in the second half.
D.C. entered the second match needing to overcome a 2-0 deficit from the teams' first match. Because away goals are the first tiebreaker, it would've taken four goals to advance once Queretaro took the lead on Sepulveda's fourth-minute goal.
That early attack began with Sinha's cross from the right to Edgar Benitez at the back post. Benitez headed the ball back across the penalty area, and Sepulveda hammered a right-footed finish beyond D.C. goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra.
Buescher came on in the 74th minute and scored 10 minutes later on a 30-yard, right-footed strike that sailed beyond Volpi's dive and into the top corner.
United nearly tied it earlier, when Miguel Martinez brought down Patrick Nyarko in the penalty area in the 55th minute. But Volpi went right to push away Rolfe's ensuing spot kick.
