Fiorentina picked up a point in their first game without Juan Cuadrado claiming a 1-1 draw at 10-man Genoa on Saturday evening.
An own goal from Fiorentina goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu gave a strong Genoa side the lead, but Gonzalo Rodriguez levelled 10 minutes into the second half.
Genoa had to play the final 10 minutes with only 10 men after Nicolas Burdisso received his marching orders, but it is they more than their guests who will feel hard done by to come away with only a point as the Viola looked particularly blunt in their attack without their Colombian winger.
Fiorentina were without both Cuadrado, who is on the verge of signing for Chelsea, and Mario Gomez, who was carrying a knock and was only on the bench, meaning Alessandro Diamanti made his first start with Khouma Babacar.
Genoa's fans, who had stayed out of the stadium for the first 10 minutes out of protest at recent refereeing decisions, entered and sent fireworks onto a field which had seen little in the way of action up to then.
They came in just in time to see their side take the lead with Stefano Sturaro's shot coming back off the inside of the left-hand post and rebounding into the back of the net off the head of Tatarusanu.
The home team continued to enjoy the better of the game with their new recruit Marcel Niang looking particularly keen to make a good impression and Sturaro, who is set to move to Juventus on Monday, getting into some good positions.
Fiorentina, for their part, lacked any incision in attack and seemed almost obliged to defend as they adjusted to the changes up front.
Their first corner of the game led to their equaliser early in the second half with Rodriguez heading in at the far post after a cross was headed on by a Genoa player.
The Viola did not alter their mindset, though, and continued to focus on defending, now with something to defend.
Sturaro should have put Genoa back in front in the 64th minute, but he flashed a shot wide from seven yards out with the whole of the goal to aim at.
Things then became more complicated for Genoa when Burdisso picked up a second yellow card with 10 minutes to go, and he was followed into the book by Sturaro, who was lucky not to follow him into the dressing room as he ridiculed the referee for his decision.
With only 10 men, it was now Genoa's turn to defend the point, although they had the best chance to snatch victory when Maxime Lestienne placed his free header straight at Tatarusanu from close range, and few would have been able to complain had he clinched victory for the Rossoblu.
