Zenit St. Petersburg top Lyon, seal qualification on Artem Dzyuba brace

Artem Dzyuba scored twice as Zenit St. Petersburg sealed their place in the Champions League knockout stages with a 2-0 win over Lyon in France.

Two simple finishes from the Russian striker stretched his side's 100 percent record in Group H to four straight wins and saw them book a quick return to the last 16.

Zenit had gone into the game full of confidence against a Lyon side who had picked up just a single point from their opening three Group H games.

But they were forced to ride their luck for periods in the first half as the French side threatened to keep alive their own slender hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

Zenit forced a pair of early saves from Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes before grabbing the lead in the 25th minute after good work by Hulk on the right.

The Brazilian beat two men before crossing to serve up the simplest of chances for Dzyuba, who slotted home to put his side on track.

Lyon staged a determined recovery with Corentin Tolisso firing just wide and captain Maxime Gonalons denied by a fine save from Zenit keeper Yuri Lodygin.

And as the hosts continued to press for their first win, former Newcastle defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa missed an open goal then Henri Bedimo smashed a powerful drive against the woodwork.

Zenit came through their sticky patch and began to take control of the game again early in the second period before effectively sealing the points through Dzyuba's second strike.

As with the opener the striker had team-mate Hulk to thank for drawing opponents before crossing for another easy opportunity to extend Zenit's lead.

Things got worse for the hosts when Gonalons was sent off 18 minutes from time, although the visitors also had Aleksandr Anyukov red-carded late on.

The win moved Zenit six points clear of second-placed Valencia and ensured the elimination of their opponents, whose poor record now extends to one point from four games.
